Its been a busy time for opal, with lots of projects taking place, including the Ivor good site competition we entered. The children and adult helpers had to decorate a huge piece of hoarding and of course because we love opal so much we decided to use this as our theme.
We all got to work painting and drawing our design. Everyone worked together helping each other to create a fantastic masterpiece which resulted in us getting the position of runners up!
It was a brilliant effort by everyone involved.
Well done guys!!!

Finding bugs for our bug hotel is great fun especially when they have a name as cool as Slimeon Cowell 😆

Look what we can make with a few materials and little bit of imagination and creativity!!

The children created Star Wars flying vehicles using loose parts they found in the wooded area.

Digging

The reception children have shown an interest in digging using a range of materials I.e. spades, forks, trowels, spoons.

They have found a small muddy area behind the wellie shed where they have spent great lengths of time digging for worms.

I have noticed that the children have become bored of the small construction area so with the children’s interest in digging we have turned the construction area into a muddy digging area, adding gardening gloves, tubs, plant pots and watering cans for them to explore.

It has been an instant success the children have loved exploring the new area. They all put the gloves on and began digging to find worms!

They soon discovered that if they added water they could make even more mud!

They all had great fun !

Wellies

Having our wellies in school gives us the freedom to explore the whole of the outdoor area (especially the mud 😃) and all of the opal equipment.

Exploring mud helps us to develop our imagination and descriptive language.

Loose parts play.

To some people these loose parts – tyres, crates, boxes sheets and tubes could look a bit like a junk yard but to children these parts empower their creativity and play.

These materials have no specific direction for play they can be used and manipulated in a variety of ways. Our children love to use loose parts as they can be creative and imaginative whilst combining a range of materials together to create lots of different play experiences.

Here are some examples of how the children have enjoyed using loose parts during their play.

Opal united!

A lot of our lower school children have been eager to mix with the upper school children at lunch time. They have been observing the older children make dens in the trees and explore in the willow and have suggested that they would like to do this too.  So we have decided to give them the opportunity to have the same play experiences during opal….they will now all mix together!

The children have thoroughly enjoyed this new experience and have explored as much of the areas as possible. They have made dens, built a bridge, dug in the mud, ran through the willow and jumped onto the large boulders.

This has been a great experience for the children, we can’t wait to observe their new journey playing as one large group.

Fun in the snow!

Everyone has had lots of fun in the snow today. The children made the most of the fantastic hills we have in the school grounds and went sledging, some even attempted to surf down the hills.

It was very cold but the children didn’t mind,  they made some lovely snowmen and a rather stylish snow sculpture!

New year new ideas 🙂

We are constantly looking at ways of keeping our children entertained and motivated to learn during their outdoor play so we have decided to add some exciting new areas and resources for them to access….and what a success these new items have been.

The children have had lots of fun and some of them have even learnt new skills too 😃

This could be the largest sack race I’ve ever seen!

It’s a house with a living room, a floor, a door and a rug.
It’s a home for a pet
And a carriage for a princess!
